Buckhorn Family Fun Day

BUCKHORN HIGH SCHOOL
New Market, Alabama

We had a great Saturday at Buckhorn High School. The band (parents helped) put together their annual "Family Fun Day".
With carnival style games like Ring Toss, Bingo, Spin the Wheel, all with the promise to win fabulous PRIZES!
Tickets

Ring Toss

Spinning Wheel

Bingo

The attractions also included some new and unique games.
We had "Rock Band" competitions in the Band Room. Complete with laser lights and
"Disco Balls". Sorry, no pictures in the dark.

Also, the Wii "Super Smash Brothers" tournament was a hit with "kids" of all ages.

TP Toss

One different game was the "TP Roll" toss. What made the toss special is the target.
The infamous "Buckhorn Purple Potty"

Something of a legend, the Purple Potty, (proper names are capitalized, right?), has an email at purplepotty@me.com. Apparently, for a nominal fee of $10, you can request the Purple Potty be placed in your friends (former?) yard. Removal is an additional $20.

Dinner

We also had local vendors shopping their wares and raffle tickets, and even a BBQ dinner from Ole Hickory BBQ.
Silent Auction
Remember this moment?
The silent auction offered many great items too.

We won a gift card to Ruby Tuesdays in the raffle and enjoyed a great lunch after church today. Like their salad bar!

PRIZES

We had levels. The scale was 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and Grand Prizes.
I guess the "value" increased, but I think the kids placed value on the prizes by their fun factor.
I hope so anyway.

The Family Fun Day was just that, fun. The fund raising for the band was good, but less than last year. Hope we do better next time.

Sewanee - University of the South

Years ago, when I lived up North, there was a TV show on Channel 8 named
"One Tank Trips".

I haven't thought of that show for a while now, but this weekend we enjoyed a
great little trip up to the Cumberland Plateau just about 50 miles from Huntsville.
A less than one tank trip!
Perched on top of the plateau is Sewanee, The University of the South.
Promoted as,
" home of one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges, a School of Letters, and a seminary of the Episcopal Church."

The school seems a jewel hidden in the beautiful wilderness of Tennessee.
I had never heard of it. Maybe you have?
The campus is highlighted with amazing buildings dating back through the 150+ year history!
Seen here is "All Saints Chapel" complete with real stained glass windows.
The school website states the campus architechture is modeled from Gothic tradition seen at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The construction of native sandstone includes garden pathways in the wooded landscape.
It just begs, "photograph me".
Since the weather was cool and rainy this weekend, we didn't get out and walk around too much, but I plan to take another short trip up to the plateau this year and hope to go for worship in the Chapel
Looking at the beauty of the campus and the purity of the university prayer, I'd say the founders have it right.
"University Prayer
Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we thy servants implore thy blessing upon this University.
Give the spirit of Wisdom to all those to whom Thou hast given the authority of teaching and of government.
Let the students grow in grace day by day; enlighten their minds, purify their hearts, and sanctify their wills.
Bless all who have contributed to this institution; and raise up to the University, we humbly pray thee,
a never-failing succession of benefactors, through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen"
